AbstractThe present study analyses the institutional development of third sector organizations based on the failures of the institutional integrity of organizations, which might have a negative effect on their original social meaning, The study considers the sector of consumer cooperatives as paradigmatic, since these organizations have reacted with the heaviest losses of its institutional capital, this is, its capacity to sintethyze entrepreneurial and associative elements, to the strong competition of the great retail corporations. Focusing on this sector, while encouraging to bring the analysis to cooperativism as a whole, the study will identify theoretical elements to establish to which extent the cooperatives under observation are undergoing a demutualization process, and are thus closer to the idea of capital with which Rochdale Pioneers were willing to break ER -
